The Calgary Food Bank is the first line of emergency food
support for families and individuals facing crisis. Once the
food emergency is addressed, we refer clients to our proven
partner agencies. Our deep collaboration and food support
to other charitable organizations that address the root
causes of food insecurity aligns with our mission to work
with our community to fight hunger.
We are the most accessible Food Bank in Calgary serving
families, individuals and over 200 organizations. We are not
a government or United Way agency. We rely solely on the
generous support of the community. ‘Community owned,
community supported’ speaks to the mind-boggling efforts
of our donors and volunteers. Together, we fight hunger
and its root causes because no one should go hungry.
1. 184,548 lives affected
2. 126,782 volunteer hours
3. 220+ Food Link Partner Agencies
4. 80% of food donations come from 400+ food industry partners
Often we are the first line of emergency food support for
families and individuals in crisis. We provide seven to 10
days’ worth of nutritious food. When the stress of providing
food is literally taken off the table, the emergency can then
be addressed. The next step is a conversation to see how
we can connect clients to other services.
Specialty hampers help us meet the unique circumstances,
diverse health and nutritional needs of our clients. There are
hampers available for clients with food allergies and specific
dietary restrictions. We also collaborate with non-profit
agencies that work with the homeless population to provide
hampers containing two to three days of ready to eat food.
Food insecurity can have lasting effects on health, especially
for children. With this in mind the Food Bank and the CBE
created a hunger-prevention program to help children get
the nutritious food they need to stay healthy and learning.
Students are identified by their teacher, counsellor or
resource worker. They receive hampers containing two days’
worth of kid-friendly meals that discreetly fit into a backpack.
Food rescue is the process of gleaning viable food so that it
is not going to waste. Instead it’s redirected to support local
communities. We directly collect from food industry and
redirect food locally, provincially and even nationally. We
are considered a critical food distribution hub and closely
work with food industry to ensure food is delivered where
it is needed most.
Food Link provides quality food and supplies to Calgary
non-profit and community organizations. It was created in
co-operation with our food industry partners who looked
for ways to broaden their donations to other groups in
Calgary. Since we have the community connections and the
capacity to handle bulk food donations, it was a natural fit.
We could not do what we do without the 160+ caring
Calgarians who give their time every day. We have over 45
different volunteer roles. From youth to seniors, weekly,
daily; volunteers fuel this organization. Volunteers are
essential to greet, chat, sort, guide, encourage, build,
engage, report and so much more.
COMMUNITY OWNED. COMMUNITY SUPPORTED.
